How Baku seeks to influence Moscow

Azerbaijan is trying to get concessions from Russia, paying special attention to the issue of the time frame for the mandate of the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Statements are periodically heard in Baku that Russian peacekeepers are temporarily in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev, certain discussions are still going on regarding additional legal mechanisms related to the mandate of the Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh.

Against this background, Rustam Muradov (ex-commander of the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh) said that in the future a decision would be made to extend the period of the contingent's stay in the conflict zone.

Azerbaijan began the stage of political bargaining, using a legal lever: without the formal consent of Baku, the Russian peacekeeping contingent cannot remain in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Official Baku is constantly raising this issue, trying to soften Russia's policy towards Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, the Russian military-political leadership is striving to end this game initiated by the Azerbaijani side. The Kremlin makes it clear that this lever in ne***iations with Russia will lead nowhere, and Azerbaijan should not count on concessions.

Moscow is doing everything in its power to help normalize the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, but it is naive to believe that it will settle everything at once.
