Resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide as American Republicans' instrument of influence

The actions of the US administration around the adoption in Congress of a resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Empire present an example of foreign policy hypocrisy. It has been again confirmed by the published details related to the blocking of the resolution.

Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, known for his consistent support for Israel, admitted that he took advantage of the right to veto a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide at the request of the White House representative. It happened after meeting in the White House with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on November 13 that was attended by Donald Trump.

During backstage discussions, the White House legislative spokesperson told Graham that Democratic Senator Robert Menendez was about to submit his resolution on the Turkey’s genocide of the Armenian people. At the same time, the specified Trump administration official appealed to Graham with a request to veto it. And Graham, of course, did it. According to the senator, his decision is related with an attempt to maintain US-Turkish relations. Graham tried to justify his actions.

"The only reason I did it is because he [Erdogan] was still in town [Washington]. That would've been poor timing. I'm trying to salvage the relationship if possible".

In fact, Washington frightened Erdogan by passing the document in both houses, although in the House of Representatives and in the Senate, the document did not create legal consequences for Turkey. However, even as a strictly political congress, the resolution for Ankara was extremely undesirable. Having brought the situation to a certain point, Washington reversed, neglecting historical justice in relation to the Armenian people. The question remains open: What did Trump get from Erdogan in return for this "reverse"?

In general, the authoritarianism and corruption level of the Republican Party is astounding. The US government is increasingly representing the mafia hierarchy, their activities are gradually undermining the system of checks and balances and the democratic system of the United States.

Now it’s clear why Trump thinks he can act with impunity. When he asks Congressional Republicans to jump, they just ask, ‘How high?’. The games played by the US administration do not benefit relations with other countries. Of course, Turkey is of much greater economic and political interest for the United States, but it is also not worth undermining the confidence of the Armenian people.
