How complimentarism as the basis of foreign policy affected Armenia
 With a deep understanding of the reasons for the surrender of the territories of Artsakh to Azerbaijan and the signing of a treacherous agreement, there is a direct relationship between the principle of complimentarism in Armenia's foreign policy and defeat in the war. The multidirectional orientation has ceased to function and be of unequivocal benefit. The republic is fragmented and does not have clear guidelines for interaction with other countries. The last year's war opened the eyes of Armenia who is a friend, who is an enemy. Armenia remains a member of the CSTO. The republic's allies in the CSTO and the EAEU, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, allowed Turkey and Azerbaijan to involve themselves in a discussion about how exactly to use the lands of the Syunik region of Armenia. It doesn't correspond with the norms of international law and the obligations arising from membership in these international organizations. Of course, the members of the CSTO and the EAEU aim to preserve their sovereignty. However, the leading is the voice of Moscow. Modern Russia, like Armenia, has been in search of a foreign policy vector of development for a long time. In the South Caucasus, Moscow and Tehran behaved passively and often haphazardly, objectively creating conditions for strengthening the influence of an active Turkey against the background of the declared aspirations of the United States to oust Russia from the region and prevent the growth of Iranian influence there. Against this background, in May 2018, the top leadership of Armenia thought that an alliance with the European Union and the United States would bring more material benefits than with Russia. Then there was still faith in the international recognition of Artsakh. During the war, the factor of Turkey's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance played a role, which demonstrated that Ankara is closer to Washington than Yerevan, despite the existing contradictions. While the United States is using the NATO format to maintain its own positions in Europe, Erdogan is actively strengthening the Turkic world through the Organization of Turkic States. Only for Armenia, all this does not have any prospects. The idea of a conspiracy between Pashinyan and Aliyev spread in society from ignorance of the realities of Armenian reality. Due to various circumstances, including the falsity of complimentarism, the republic found itself in a kind of trap. The longer you close your eyes from the truth, the longer you remain in the dark and deny the obvious. |
