The first celebration of March 8
In ancient Rome, there was a celebration dedicated to women. Only women who were married or had high status were given presents on the holiday called "Born free Women’s Holiday". As regards the female workers, they were given the opportunity to rest on that day.
The basis of the holiday was laid in 1857, on March 8, when textile workers from New York marched through the streets of the city complaining of low salaries and unfavourable working conditions.
Day of Women's Rights
For the first time ever in Europe, the Day of Women's Rights was celebrated in 1911, on March 19th. Then, three years later, it was decided to mark it on March 8. March 8 became legitimate when the Social Democrats gained the opportunity to form a government.
March 8 - International Women’s day
In 1910 at the International Women's Conference in Copenhagen, Clara Tsetkin proposed to mark the International Women's Day on March 8 in commemoration of the New York events as the birthday of the proletarian class of women.
This day in Russia is celebrated since 1913. In the Soviet Union, March 8 was considered to be a non-working day in 1965.
The first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. In 1977, the United Nations declared March 8 International Women's Day.
March 8 in Armenia
After the declaration of independence, March 8, 1996, was removed from the Armenian state calendar. Instead, April 7 was proclaimed Motherhood and Beauty Day. Then, in 2001, a new Law on Holidays and Commemoration was adopted, in which the March 8 was re-established in the state calendar.
