The Importance of American Congressmen and the Armenian Diaspora in the Post-Revolutionary Development of Armenia

The proposal of US President Donald Trump to interrogate and arrest suspected of treason Congressman Adam Schiff has been perceived in Armenia like a bolt from the blue. The reason for the emergence of feelings among the leadership of the republic is the pronounced pro-Armenian position of this congressman, due to the high level of interaction with diasporal structures.

Adam Schiff, chairman of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, is also one of the most influential lobbyists for the interests of Armenia and Artsakh in Congress. He has made many official statements on the Karabakh issue and the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The congressman regularly participates in the activities of the Armenian National Committee of America. That is why the American domestic political scandal bothers Armenian government.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan devotes too much time and effort on developing relations with Armenian Americans in the hope of their assistance in promoting Armenian interests or providing grants. It’s not the time to lose the accumulated circle of influence, when an escalation of the situation on the border with Azerbaijan may occur at any time. At the same time, the scandal with Schiff allows the government of Armenia to realize the absurdity of fully relying on the help of the diaspora and the US government in protecting their own interests in the international arena.

This is also confirmed by the meeting of Pashinyan with the Armenian diaspora in mid-September 2019 in Los Angeles, that was attended by about 10 thousand people. The expected number of participants was three times more. Only one of the 53 invited congressmen and senators, Adam Schiff, attended this event.

Obviously, given the current situation, in enmity with Trump, Adam Schiff will in the near future pay much less attention to working to strengthen relations between the US and Armenia. Of course, there are also congressmen Frank Pallone and Jackie Speyer, who have been trying in vain to advance the interests of Armenia for a long period of time, demanding that the US Department of State and the Department of Defense cease military assistance to Azerbaijan. Sometimes it seems that they also comply with the decrees of the higher leadership in encouraging the population of Armenia, since the real results of their activities are not observed.
