     February is the last month of winter. And it depends only on the person himself whether he will fall into hibernation and, as a result, into a seasonal depression or will actively spend winter months and receive a charge of energy for the whole year.

TRNDEZ AND ST. VALENTINE’S DAY IN ARMENIA

One of the most beloved holidays is February 14 – a wonderful combination of the Armenian holiday Trndez and St. Valentine’s Day. What is common between these holidays, and what is their difference?

The common thing between these holidays is that they unite all lovers and bring light, good and positive emotions. Both holidays are accompanied by folk festivals.

ARMENIAN TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS OF TRNDEZ

How do they celebrate Trndez in Armenia? If the patron saint of all lovers everywhere is St. Valentine, in Armenia he is called St. Sargis. Sargis was among the first Armenians to adopt Christianity.

HOW IS VALENTINE’S DAY/TRNDEZ CELEBRATED IN ARMENIA?

Not only lovers and just married couples love Trndez: young people who have not yet met their soul mates are waiting for this day, perhaps, more than lovers.

The fact is that, according to belief, before going to bed, a lonely young man or a girl eats salty biscuits (in Armenian – "Aghi Blit"), and do not drink water. In their dream, their future husband/wife gives them water.

Another sign: people put a dish with roasted wheat on the roof. It is believed that St. Sargis visits all the houses of Armenians, who left food on the roof. If a hoof mark remains on the dish, then this house will be visited by luck.
     The main symbol of Trndez is the fire.

Fire is the symbol of purification so just married couples jump over the fire hand in hand, then comes the time for childless women to jump, hoping to get pregnant soon. At the end of the holiday, everyone is dancing around the fire.

Nowadays in urban conditions, it is not always possible to make a fire, so young people, paying tribute to ancient traditions, walk around the city, holding lighted candles in their hands, visit cafes and clubs enjoying the presence of each other.
