Khndzoresk is one of the must-see places in Armenia! This fantastic place is a mixture of adventure, wonderful nature, adrenaline, fresh air, mysterious caves and whatnot can be seen in Khndzoresk!

The origin of the name Khndzoresk

There are many stories about the origin of the village Khndzoresk. One of them says that in ancient times the village was called Khor Dzor (Deep Abyss), or Hordzoresk because it was located in a deep gorge. According to another version, a large number of apple trees grew in this area and over time, the village turned into Khndzoresk where "Khndzor" means apple.

Khndzoresk location

Now the cave city Khndzoresk, stretching for about three kilometres on the slopes of a deep gorge and at an altitude of 1580 m above sea level, is completely empty. In the ancient times the location of Khdzoresk caves on a hill allowed to beat the enemies.

Khndzoresk caves

At the beginning of the 20th century, about eight thousand people lived in these caves. In the 1950s, the authorities decided that Soviet citizens had no need to huddle in dark, cold holes and moved them. The new village of Khndzoresk is not much different from other villages in the republic, while the old, the cave city, holds many undisclosed secrets.

     Khndzoresk Churches

In addition to the cave city in Khndzoresk, half-destroyed temples are also located here: the church of St. Hripsime with a bell tower, built in 1663, and the church of St. Tadevos.

     Khndzoresk hanging bridge

In 2012, a hanging bridge, unique for the whole region, appeared in the village. Previously, locals and tourists could visit only one part of the gorge, and to get to the opposite side, you had to walk. Thus, the bridge made life easier for both residents and travellers.

     Devil's bridge Armenia

According to the residents, the hanging bridge was built by the whole village, since it was impossible to use the equipment and all the work was done manually. In fact, this bridge connected not only the two sides of the gorge but also the past with the present.

Khndzoresk bridge length

The 160-meter long bridge weight 14 tons.
