Yerevan becomes the leading platform of CSTO

Despite the protest activity of the opposition forces in Armenia, June in Yerevan is full of events related to the activities of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The republic took over the chairmanship last year.

On June 6, a meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly was held, at which CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas noted the need to successfully complete the demarcation and delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in order to strengthen the security of the South Caucasus.

On June 10, under the chairmanship of Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization will be held, at which the heads of diplomatic departments will discuss the state of international and regional security and its impact on the security of the member states of the organization.

In turn, the meeting of the Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils of the CSTO, headed by Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Armenia Armen Grigoryan, will be held on June 17.

Armenia attaches great importance to strengthening the potential of the CSTO, creating a full-fledged military-political structure based on trust and mutual understanding. Against the backdrop of continued internal political tensions in the republic, the leadership is aimed at closer involvement in the activities of the organization, which in January 2022, at the request of the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, carried out an operation to assist in maintaining law and order in connection with the mass protests that escalated in Almaty armed clashes between protesters and government forces.

Only thanks to the effective operational work of the CSTO forces, Kazakhstan managed to maintain sovereignty. The results of the peacekeeping operation confirmed the readiness of the Organization to take timely measures to counter challenges and threats to the security of member states and demonstrated the role of the CSTO in maintaining regional stability.

The events in Kazakhstan have shown that in most cases protest groups are controlled by various circles, their real goal is to create chaos within the state, oppose the strengthening of the state, and fulfill the interests of external circles.

Currently, the leadership of the CSTO member countries is also collegially developing legislative mechanisms to protect electoral processes from external interference.

Armenia's chairmanship in the CSTO is taking place at a time of complex transformation of the world's security architecture. Conflict potential is growing along the entire perimeter of the borders of the allied states. Difficult and difficult situation on the border of Tajikistan with Afghanistan. The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh remains tense. Azerbaijan continues to pursue a rather aggressive policy towards Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The incursion of Azerbaijani units into the zone of responsibility of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh causes concern.

In the rapidly changing modern geopolitical realities, membership in the CSTO is of certain importance for the security of Armenia. Presidency in the becoming full-fledged military-political bloc corresponds to the national interests of the republic.
