Does Armenia needs strengthening relations with Russia?

Against the backdrop of rising tensions, Armenia has to face additional challenges and threats. Whether Turkey and Azerbaijan will take advantage of the current situation will show time.

Yerevan has not created a solid base for ne***iations with Ankara to normalize relations. It is worth considering that the only favorable factor that inspires hope for an acceptable outcome of the ne***iations between Armenia and Turkey is the participation of Russia in them as a mediator.

The level of Armenian-Russian relations has grown significantly. On the day when the leadership of the Russian Federation officially recognized the sovereignty of the LDNR, a telephone conversation took place between the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Russia. Pashinyan received an invitation from Putin to visit Moscow in the near future.

According to political strategist Armen Badalyan, the expected ne***iations between Pashinyan and Putin have a strictly defined goal - the signing of an agreement on Armenia's accession to the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

Despite the rapid change in events, the Armenian leadership is not yet ready to take such a step, which is still likely to happen.

One thing is clear: the defense cooperation between the Armenian and Russian military departments, that is a key factor in Armenia's security, will continue to grow.

Recall that after the end of the war in Karabakh a number of representatives of the authorities and opposition of the republic stated the need to strengthen the strategic alliance with Russia, up to the creation of a Union State with it.

The need to deepen bilateral ties in the military-political sphere is especially emphasized, and confidence is also expressed that without Russian assistance it will not be possible to restore the combat capability of the Armenian army to the level that preceded the war in Karabakh in the fall of 2020.
