Yoga in the classroom

You go to class and you feel like it seems that everything is about to explode, you spend part of the session "putting out fires", solving one small conflict after another… does it sound familiar?

Creating an emotionally healthy environment is the foundation for making learning possible. When I feel part of a group I secrete oxytocin, a hormone that in turn favors pro-social behaviors, when I am in a safe space I produce serotonin, a hormone that lowers aggressiveness levels and regulates moods, and when I am motivated dopamine influencing creativity, memory and the fulfillment of your goals.

During years of work in numerous centers, we have been developing what we at https://writeanypapers.com/ have called a pedagogic methodology, through which we work on these and many other aspects through tools such as positive discipline, postural alignment, sensory integration, emotional education, mindfulness, theater, dance, relaxation.

Among all these tools, today we will talk about one of them, relaxation. Our yoga sessions for children and adolescents begin with a first phase of tuning in, where we see how the group is and what it needs to be able to start with the class. There are times when we arrive and notice that state of agitation or after a serious conflict, we start directly with a good relaxation. I can assure you that after this the environment will have changed and another way of working will be possible.

There are several relaxations that I love to use with both children and adolescents:

  • Jacobson's progressive relaxation. My favorite with teenagers
  • Guided visualizations. I created this for my students at IES Azahar
  • Body scan.
  • Nanas, my favorite in childhood.

Finally, I leave you three little tips for your relaxation:

  1. Bringing relaxation to your classroom is a process, so be patient, the students will gradually get used to this way of working, and each time they will go deeper into relaxation.
  2. For adolescents, it is even more necessary since we know that their circadian rhythms have changed (they go to bed later) and sometimes we have students who have only slept a few hours with all that this entails.
  3. It is also possible that after a good relaxation there will be an emotional release, which will be welcome. We must facilitate the conditions to be able to express what they are feeling.
