Intensification of the fight against the Mafia in 2020
The number of anti-mafia bans increased by 25% compared to 2019, according to La Repubblica. It is particularly in the southern regions, where the Mafia is most powerful, that bans have increased. The regions most affected are thus Campania (Campania), Sicily (Sicilia) and Calabria (Calabria) . Mafia organizations took advantage of the health crisis and the distress of many businesses to offer them help. You can check out Major-Prépa's article on the Mafia to learn more about its processes.
The 2020 Italian constitutional referendum
It took place on September 20 and 21 and allowed the Italians to decide on a possible reduction in the number of parliamentarians. The amendment was approved by around 70% by the voters, thus increasing the number of deputies from 630 to 400 and that of senators from 315 to 200. The Italian Parliament is composed of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, and is based on a perfect bicameralism, that is to say that neither of the two chambers takes precedence over the other. This amendment should increase the total number of parliamentarians from 945 to 600 by 2023 (in the next elections) .
Matteo Salvini's trial postponed
The former interior minister is to be tried for blocking the disembarkation of 116 migrants from the "Gregoretti" (the coastguard ship) . He faces up to 15 years in prison for "abuse of power and kidnapping of people". The hearing has been postponed to November 20 because the judge notably wants to hear Giuseppe Conte (the head of government) .
Softening of anti-immigrant laws by Matteo Salvini
About 16 months ago, Matteo Salvini introduced laws to reduce immigration. In particular, he made the conditions for obtaining asylum more stringent. With Italy being the main gateway for migrants to Europe, he had focused his campaign on the fight against immigration. The current government then decided to relax the laws it put in place, for example by ending the policy of sanctioning NGO ships rescuing migrants.
Flaminio's fetus case
In the cemetery of Flaminio in Rome, the names of a large number of Italian women who have undergone voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) have been inscribed on stelae. None of these women have been notified and it is strictly forbidden to disclose the identity of a person who has performed an abortion. It is then a question of finding out who may have revealed this information. This news item can be interesting to mobilize, in an essay or even orally, to highlight a not insignificant section of the Italian population which remains very conservative.
The good Italian results in the fight against Covid-19
Italy is arguably the European country that has been confronted with the virus in the most brutal way. The country is today cited by Angela Merkel among those that should not be avoided if one wants to travel to Europe. Although there has been a rebound in the number of people tested positive in recent days, Italy is among the "good performers" in Europe.
However, it will be necessary to wait until 2022 to return to economic activity similar to that preceding the epidemic, according to the government. GDP is expected to decline by 9% in 2020, then pick up again the following year.
