New Year and Christmas are magic holidays and people around the world search for the best place to celebrate the coming of a new era in their life. Armenians have their own ways of celebrating these days. Let’s discover why to choose Armenia?

New Year in Armenia

Armenians start the celebration of New Year late at night on December 31. At 12 PM the New Year table should be ready, all the family members should be well dressed.

At first, Armenians listen to the speech of the head of the Armenian Apostolic church. Then it is the president’s turn! The glasses are full and everyone waits for the clock to strike 12. At last, the celebration starts.

New Year traditions in Armenia

1. New Year dishes

New Year table in Armenia should be rich and full of different types of dishes, fruits, salads, sweets and so on. It seems like that Armenian women compete whose table is going to win the competition of "the best New Year Table", so you will be able to find all the food in the world on one Armenian New Year table.

2. Visiting relatives and friends

This tradition is very popular in Armenia and after 12 PM people visit their friends and relatives. This host-guest tradition has its own rules – you should start visiting the most honourable guest first (they are your parents) . Taking a candy (Armenians name it "Banbanerka") is a must.

3. Armenian Santa tradition

Armenian Santa has a different name – he is often called "Dzmer Pap" which is translated as "Snow granny". In the older times, Armenian Santa was called also "Kaghand Pap" where Kaghand became a synonym to the word New Year. Armenian Santa does not come down the chimney but he prefers to knock on the door and leave the gifts in front of the door.

Christmas in Armenia

Being the first country to accept Christianity Armenia stays true to the first date chosen for Christmas: in Armenia Christmas is not celebrated on December 25 as in many countries, but it is celebrated on January 6th.

Christmas Traditions in Armenia

1. Fastening before Christmas

One week before Christmas Armenians starts their fast. People say that it has two main meanings – the first meaning is religious when they clean their heart from hatred, the soul from devil and stomach from unhealthy food. The second meaning of the fast is medical as after eating so many delicious healthy and unhealthy food our stomach has a need to recover.

2. Gifts are not necessary

On Christmas day it is not so necessary to give gifts to each other as Armenians do during New Year. In Armenia, New Year is the most important holiday so all the gift giving and receiving actions are done during New Year.

3. Special greetings

Armenians have a unique greeting during Christmas. When they meet in the street, they greet each other with these words: "Christ is Born and Revealed". And the answer to the greeting is "Good news for you and us".
